A team from Achenbach recently had the opportunity to visit the UPS hub at Cologne/Bonn Airport in the middle of the night. The logistics center is UPS's central hub in Europe 🌍 and is the second largest facility of its kind in the world.
Every night, up to 18 cargo planes – including jumbo jets – are handled there by around 2,800 employees per shift. In the state-of-the-art, semi-automated sorting facilities, incoming and outgoing shipments are assigned to the correct destination regions and forwarded at lightning speed.
Customs clearance for third-country shipments is fully integrated into the process, as is end-to-end shipment tracking. Particularly impressive: the hub operates on a daily basis – every night starts with zero backlog.
